Gender equality and improving the quality of life of womenfolk is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today said Almas Jiwani during her address at the forum organized by UNDP-GEF Small Grants Program.
Highlighting on rural women issues, she said that: 43 percent of the world’s agricultural and 47 percent of the global fisheries labor force is comprised of women. It was unfortunate that those hard-working women produce more than half of the world’s food but still remain hungry, unhealthy and away from the basic amenities of life.
“Men have to be the champions for gender equality and NGOs have to come up with innovative ideas and solutions to improve the quality of life of an ordinary rural and poor urban house hold. Highlighting the SGP innovations on energy efficient low-carbon cooks-stoves, housing and lighting as great effort to bring change in the quality of life of the households in general and womenfolk in particular,” said Almas Jiwani.
Masood Lohar, the National Program Manager of UNDP-GEF Small Grants Program was recognized by Almas Jiwani for his outstanding work on gender equality and community-based Climate Change solution making. She especially highlighted the SGP innovations on energy efficient low-carbon cooking-stoves, housing and lighting as great effort to bring change in the quality of life of the households in general and womenfolk in particular. She also announced that her foundation was in the process of introducing these SGP Pakistan technologies in developing countries.
Mr. Lohar said the prototypes of all of their products have been developed, tested and promoted in the rural household of the region. Unless the energy efficiency does not become the key element of cooking, housing, lighting and heating, neither Climate Change issues nor gender inequality issues would be solved.
