The primary motivation in establishing the Peace Symposium is a belief that there is no more urgent undertaking facing humanity than that of creating societal conditions that support the inner peace of individuals, a healthy and balanced relationship to the natural world, greater understanding and mutual respect among the people of this planet, and harmonious relations between states. Almas Jiwani addressed participants of the symposium in Halifax and discussed the role of women in development and conflict-affected areas. The way people experience conflict is directly based on their gender and thus women play an integral part of peacebuilding activities and they must be consulted as key stakeholders in the peacebuilding process.
